Technology Expertise

Six disciplines, Deep technology expertise.

A record of what we cover, what makes each area hard to hire into, and the roles we search. Depth in a defined set of disciplines is what makes a shortlist worth reading.

01Software Engineering
Scope
The people who build and maintain the product itself, across server, client and mobile.
Technologies & areas
  • Java
  • .NET
  • Python
  • Node.js
  • React
  • Angular
  • Android
Where it gets difficult
Two engineers with the same languages on their CV can be a long way apart.A shared stack tells you where someone has worked, not how they work. The distance usually shows in how they reason about a system they did not design, which is not something a keyword match can test.
Roles we search
  • Backend
  • Frontend
  • Full Stack
  • Mobile
02Cloud & DevOps
Scope
Infrastructure, automation and the internal platforms engineering teams build on.
Technologies & areas
  • AWS
  • Azure
  • Kubernetes
  • CI/CD
  • Infrastructure
Where it gets difficult
The same job title describes different work at almost every company.Keeping pipelines running in one business; owning a platform other engineers build on in another. Until that is settled, a search built on the title selects for the wrong thing.
Roles we search
  • Cloud Engineering
  • DevOps
  • SRE
  • Platform Engineering
03Data & AI
Scope
Data platforms, analytics and machine learning — from pipelines through to models in production.
Technologies & areas
  • SQL
  • Snowflake
  • BigQuery
  • Databricks
  • Airflow
  • dbt
Where it gets difficult
One job description, three different careers.Data engineering, analytics and machine learning sit close together on an org chart and are often written into a single brief. They draw on three largely separate labour markets, and a description that covers all three describes none of them precisely.
Roles we search
  • Data Engineering
  • Data Architecture
  • Data Science
  • AI / Machine Learning
  • Data Analytics
04Cybersecurity
Scope
Security engineering, cloud security, operations and governance.
Technologies & areas
  • Cloud Security
  • IAM
  • Application Security
  • Network Security
  • Vulnerability Management
  • Compliance
Where it gets difficult
Certifications are the easiest thing to verify and the least revealing.Security capability shows up in judgement under uncertainty — when an alert is ambiguous, or a control has to be weighed against delivery. Credentials and tool lists confirm exposure, not reasoning.
Roles we search
  • Security Engineering
  • Security Architecture
  • Security Operations
  • Security Consulting
05Enterprise Technology
Scope
The platforms a business runs on, and the integrations that hold them together.
Technologies & areas
  • SAP
  • ServiceNow
  • ERP
  • CRM
  • Middleware
  • ITSM
Where it gets difficult
Naming the platform is not the same as naming the work.Within a single product, the module, the version, and whether someone implemented it or has run it for years produce very different candidates — and the product name is the same in every case.
Roles we search
  • Enterprise Applications
  • Integration
  • Infrastructure
06Quality & Automation
Scope
Quality engineering, test automation, and the people who keep releases safe to ship.
Technologies & areas
  • Selenium
  • Cypress
  • API Testing
  • Performance Testing
  • Regression Testing
Where it gets difficult
Similar titles hide very different automation capability. The range runs from executing an existing suite to designing the framework it sits in. Both can carry the same title and the same number of years, so neither signal separates them.
Roles we search
  • Software Testing
  • Automation Testing
  • QA Leadership
A separate capability

Technology Leadership & Delivery

Senior appointments
Scope
Beyond the six core disciplines, we support senior technology leadership and delivery appointments, handled as a search.
Technologies & areas
  • Agile Delivery
  • Scrum
  • Program Management
How it is handled
These conversations usually begin before a role is public.Targeted search and market mapping rather than advertising, with discretion through the process for both sides.
Roles we search
  • Engineering Management
  • Technology Project Management
  • Scrum Master
  • Program Management
  • Product Management
  • Business Analysis
  • Delivery Leadership
Expertise into search

What the understanding actually changes.

Technical depth is only worth having if it changes the work. Here is where it does, stage by stage.

01Understand the brief

We ask what you are building and why the role matters before we ask for a specification. Without the technical context, a job description is a list.

02Interpret the technical context

We separate what the role genuinely requires from what has been written down out of habit. Must-have and nice-to-have are rarely labelled as such.

03Identify relevant talent

We map where that experience actually sits, then approach directly. Knowing the discipline is what makes the map narrow enough to be useful.

04Assess fit

Capability, motivation, context and the environment they would be joining. A technical conversation is the only way to test the first of those.

05Present the shortlist

A focused selection, with the reasoning behind each one written down. You should be able to see why a person is on the list.
